Favorites & Underdogs

If we look at all the wars fought over the last 200 years between a very strong country (in terms of weapons, soldiers, economy, etc.) and a significantly weaker one, how often do you think the stronger one wins?

Most would answer that the stronger almost always wins.

The real answer, however, may surprise you.

Political scientist Ivan Arreguín-Toft calculated this a few years ago and concluded that about 3 times out of 10, the weaker side wins.

However, if the weaker side chooses to fight using unconventional methods and refuses to fight the way the stronger side expects, it will win more than 6 out of 10 times!

Lawrence of Arabia, who led the Arab revolt against the Turkish army, decided to attack coming from one of the most inhospitable places in the Middle East. His soldiers were “an untrained mess, most of whom had never fired a rifle.”

When they finally reached Aqaba, they captured the city, taking hundreds of fully armed Turks prisoner or killing them, who simply hadn’t expected their opponent to be crazy enough to attack from the desert.

Many advantages come from having abundant material resources, but there is also a set of advantages that comes from the absence of available resources.

This is why underdogs often defeat favorites.

Everything on the Internet

Is there anything today for which there is no information on the internet?

Such a thing is extremely rare.

Although internet usage in recent years has reached such a high level that it is almost unusual for information not to exist online, there is still a gap in knowing the right way for a small to medium business owner, a blogger, or even an amateur to develop their online presence.

Among Millions of Results

How can one result stand out among millions of others?

Simply put, it must be better than all the others in terms of content, technical quality, user-friendliness, and at the same time have gained enough popularity (e.g., backlinks from other sites).

But is the #1 spot in search results necessary to succeed?

The answer is no!

The Next Step

Whether it’s a simple web page, like a recipe page, or a huge company like Apple, the main motivation of content creators is for the page to attract visitors, have them “consume” the information it contains, and depending on the type and purpose of the page, guide them to the next step.

The main motivation of content creators on the internet is for users to “consume” the information in order to move on to the next step.

This could be purchasing a product, subscribing to a newsletter, watching a video, or even selling ad space within the page itself, etc.

Great Website

Whether someone is a freelancer, a shop owner, or a small business owner of any kind, a great website is essential for the success of their endeavor.

The same applies even to amateurs involved in a hobby, a local club, or an organization.

A great website can excel at two things:

  1. Attracting visitors from the vast, global internet.
  2. Converting those visitors into customers.

Creating and maintaining great websites is a journey!

The journey to a great website can eventually lead you to beat the giants of the internet.

Bon voyage!
